BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross. The X means cross. BMX is a general term that applies to bicycle motocross racing, stunt riding, and
dirt jumping. Most people think of racing when they here the term BMX.

Freestyle is another name for bicycle stunt riding. Bicycle stunt riding can involve ramp riding, street riding, or doing tricks on flat ground. Colin Winkelmann and Leigh Ramsdell are the freestyle riders on the 1-800-COLLECT team.

A BMX track is a short dirt course consisting of jumps and banked turns. Riders race for one lap that normally lasts between thirty and forty seconds. Tracks are normally between fifteen to thirty feet wide. Riders start behind a gate that falls forward and releases riders at the same time. Up to eight riders race at one time.

A one-lap race around a BMX track. Each BMX race consists of three motos to determine who advances to the finals. Neal Wood has to race well in his motos to transfer to the next round of qualifying.

The main event is the finale. How you finish in your main determines how you finish for the day. Pros race in three mains to determine the rider who is best overall. All three finishes are added up and the racer with the lowest number wins.

When a BMX racer pulls a wheelie to get their front wheel up on top or over the back of a jump. During a speed jump a rider's back tire never leaves the ground. Speed jumping is a fast method of getting over jumps.

Doubles are two piles of dirt used for jumping. The first pile is the lip from where a rider takes off and the second pile is the landing. Doubles are popular on BMX tracks and wherever dirt jumpers ride.

A series of three consecutive sets of doubles (six piles of dirt). Six packs are often used as the course for dirt jumping contests. Chris Doyle can do 360's all the way through a six pack.

Vert stands for vertical referring to the vertical walls of a half-pipe ramp. A half-pipe "U" shaped ramp that resembles a pipe that has been cut in half. Riders ride up and down each side of the half-pipe and try to fly as high as possible over the ramp before turning 180° and riding up the other side. Vert riders do different tricks and spins while in the air. Leigh Ramsdell is the vert rider on the 1-800-COLLECT team.

A trick where a rider pulls up off the lip of a jump, flips completely upside-down, and then rides away. Back-flips are always a crowd favorite. Colin Winkelmann can do no-handed backflips.
